MGIMO at International Studies Association 60th Convention

March 27th to March 30th, a delegation from MGIMO participated in the 60th anniversary convention of the International Studies Association in Toronto; an event which annually gathers over six thousand experts in International Relations.

This year, the convention was dedicated to «Re-visioning International Studies: Innovation and Progress». Scholars discussed in a myriad of panels and round tables the prospects for the evolution of International Relations as a discipline and analysed the current problems on the international stage, both theoretical and practical.

MGIMO was represented by a large delegation of academics, who took part as speakers and moderators in a number of different sessions. The University’s Vice-Rector for Graduate and International Programs Andrey Baykov chaired a discussion on «Military Alliances, Inequality and International Bargaining» and contributed to a discussion on the future of Russian-American relations. The Head of the Department for Applied International Analysis (PAMP), Tatiana Shakleina also spoke within this section. The Associate Professor of PAMP Igor Istomin presented his research on Norms and Technological Change.

The Director of the Institute of International Studies, Andrey Sushentsov, took part in several sections, speaking on the role of force in international relations, the 20th anniversary of the NATO operation against Yugoslavia and the rivalry between the great powers in the 21st century. The Dean of the School of Government and International Affairs, Mikhail Troitskiy gave a presentation during a session on «New Diplomacy for New Conflicts».

The Head of the World Politics Department, Marina Lebedeva, spoke on network universities as the driving force of integration and on the current crisis in relations between Russia and the West. Leading Professors spoke on great powers in Eurasia, Russian foreign policy, the Asia-Pacific region and other topics.
