MGIMO Alumni Meeting in Almaty

December 16th and 17th, the MGIMO Alumni Association of Kazakhstan organized an international meeting of graduates of the University in Almati, which was attended not only by local alumni but also former MGIMO students from Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary and other countries.

The group of graduates gathered to watch the play «Abay» at the M.Auezov State Academic Drama Theater, thus continuing MGIMO’s anniversary celebrations.

Opening the meeting, the Kazakh public figure who graduated from MGIMO in 1974 G.Kasymov congratulated the audience on Independence Day and on the 75th anniversary of the University, and offered MGIMO Rector A.Torkunov a memorable present from the graduates of Kazakhstan, a picture «Suinshi». Then the Director of the MGIMO Alumni Association I.Arsenyev and the University’s Press Officer V.Kalashnikova gave G.Kasymov on behalf of the Rector the sign of Honorary Member of the MGIMO Alumni Association.

On the second day, the MGIMO group participated in sport team activities at the Lesnaya Skazka ski resort and attended a discussion session with the Chairman of the National Bank of Kazakhstan (1999-2004, 2009-2013), a 1984 graduate G.Marchenko on what it takes to be an effective leader.

The MGIMO community in Kazakhstan is one of the most numerous and dynamic of the University’s clubs abroad. It was initiated by the President of Kazakhstan, a graduate of 1975, K-J.Tokayev, who also helped to develop an international network of graduates through his participation in the Geneva Club of MGIMO Alumni while he worked at the United Nations.

The MGIMO Alumni Association, chaired by the 2008 graduate A.Shayakhmetova, is the most active MGIMO group abroad and holds monthly sport, cultural and business events all over the country.
