On November 16–17, on the eve of the state visit of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan to the Russian Federation, the second Russian-Uzbek Educational Forum was held in Moscow sponsored by the Russian Union of Rectors. The event gathered heads of ministries and agencies of Russia and Uzbekistan, and more than 100 rectors and representatives of leading Russian and Uzbek universities. The opening plenary session was attended by Anatoly Torkunov, MGIMO Rector and member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The plenary session of the Forum was moderated by Viktor Sadovnichy, Rector of Moscow State University, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Inomzhom Madzhidov, Rector of the National University of Uzbekistan. President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan sent greetings to the Forum participants. The leaders of the two countries praised the results of bilateral academic and scientific cooperation in recent years and stressed mutual interest in its further development.

Sergey Kravtsov, Russia’s Minister of Education, and Abdukodir Toshkulov, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Higher and Vocational Education, spoke at the Forum’s opening.

The agenda was topped by key areas of Russian-Uzbek cooperation in training of experts, scientific cooperation between Russia and Uzbekistan, teaching and dissemination of the Russian language in Uzbekistan and humanitarian projects taking into account the priorities of bilateral cooperation, experience and prospects for the integration of the two countries’ education systems from the levels of pre-school education and upbringing to higher education.

MGIMO Rector Torkunov spoke in detail about the work done to develop educational cooperation with Uzbekistan. The Rector stressed that MGIMO University is the first Russian university of the "new wave" of branches opened in Uzbekistan. Currently, more than 350 students are studying at the Tashkent branch in two Bachelor's degree programs and three Master's degree programs, with part of the training carried out in Russia.

Rector Torkunov said that MGIMO seeks to expand its presence in Uzbekistan not only in the field of higher education, but also at the school level. Now, MGIMO has five classes at the International House academic lyceum at Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers and the Lyceum of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy. "Last year, the first graduation of lyceum students took place. Thanks to close cooperation with Rosobrnadzor, an examination facility was opened for MGIMO lyceum classes. This year, the examination facility will operate again — we intend to open it at the Tashkent branch”.

Elaborating on further work in this area, the Rector stressed that MGIMO University has already concluded working agreements with Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology on joint implementation of school projects, and this is to become the most important task for 2022, including within the framework of the implementation of the state program "Priority 2030".

Anatoly Torkunov also focused on MGIMO's practice of conducting regular scientific and practical workshops through the prism of comparative analysis. Workshops have been organized on topical issues of the development of the legal framework, the financial system, the digital development system of Russia and Uzbekistan.
